Before working with dairy farmers, Lewis was a fully qualified plasterer and plumber. But after spending over seven years on a bull stud, he found his true passion in genetics and farm solutions. Now, as a Farm Solutions Consultant for LIC in the UK, part of the wider Cogent team, Lewis plays a key role in helping pasture-based farmers optimise their herds.
A practical path to genetics
Rather than coming through an agricultural degree, Lewis’s experience has been hands-on. “I’ve always been focused on making sure customers get what they need and want while helping to drive profit on farm,” he says. That customer-first approach has helped him establish strong relationships across his region in Devon and Cornwall.
“If you have the passion for breeding and driving profit into farms, this is the career move for you,” Lewis explains, reflecting on his unconventional journey into the industry.
Growing with the grazing community
Since joining LIC three and a half years ago, Lewis’s responsibilities have expanded. He is now part of the UK bull selection team, working with genetics from New Zealand, and he sits on an AHDB panel for one of his customers.
A particular career highlight was leading a study tour to New Zealand, where British farmers could see first-hand the farming systems that have influenced LIC’s breeding programme. “Having the opportunity to learn and travel to enhance both my personal knowledge and on-farm advice has been invaluable,” he says.
Meeting today’s farming challenges
Lewis understands the challenges his farmers face, particularly with fluctuating milk prices and unpredictable weather conditions. His approach focuses on practical solutions that drive profitability, whether it’s selecting the right genetics, improving fertility management, or helping farmers maximise tools like PrecisionCOW collars and colostrum protocols.
“Seeing farmers progress and being part of their team on farm is what drives me,” he says. “Giving good advice and challenging them to make better decisions is something I take pride in.”
Family man with a sporting spirit
When he’s not on farm, Lewis can be found playing rugby for Ivybridge or spending time with his daughter. His love for country music and his well-known mullet have made him a familiar face in both farming and rugby circles. “I feel extremely lucky that I get up every day and do something I love, working with some of the very best farmers in the dairy industry,” he shares.
Looking to the future
As pasture-based systems continue to grow in Britain, Lewis sees exciting opportunities ahead. “I would like to see myself continue to grow and be a massive part of the growing grazing population,” he says. His ambitions extend to management, where he hopes to help others progress in their careers in the industry.
